5 Reasons You Should Use Protein Supplements For Weight Loss
Posted on Aug 08, 2008 under FAQs, General, Soy Protein, Whey Protein |
Typically, protein supplements have been used by bodybuilders and those who want to build muscle and get bigger. This is all changing right now, as protein supplements become much more mainstream. People are now starting to realize the positive effects of whey protein, and how protine supplements can help in so many aspects of life (see this protein page for more info of specific supplements).
So now suoplement manufacturers are starting to make excellent protein powders that are focused on weight loss. I am personally a big fan of these. The weight loss protein supplements are filtered and contain almost pure protein, with little to no fat and no additives. Here’s some reasons why you would want to use protein for weight loss:
5 Reasons to use protein supplements for weight loss:
- Protein increases your metabolism. Increasing your daily protein intake increases how fast your body can burn and use food as energy. The faster your metabolism, the less likely your body is to store food as fat.In fact, protein takes more energy break down than carbs and fat so you’re actually burning more calories when you’re taking it!
- Protein supplements are dead easy. Nothing is easier than throwing some protein powder and water in a shaker and mixing yourself up a meal. Much of the reason for the obesity problems people face now is due to laziness. Even if you don’t want to make a meal for yourself, you can whip up a shake in no time. You can also take a shaker with you where you’re out, just with the powder in it. Just whack some water in there, and you have yourself a stomach filler in between meals.
- Protein promote lean muscle growth. I’m not saying you’ll get huge from drinking protein shakes, but your muscles will definitely benefit from it. Many people have reported increased strength and muscle mass from taking whey protein supplements with only slight exercise changes.
- Whey protein contains high amounts of glutamine and BCAAs. Glutamine is the primary source for the body’s immune system, and plays essential roles in dozens of bodily functions. BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) are the building blocks of muscle than can increase lean muscle mass, stamina, and recovery from exercise.
- Cost. $45 for a 5lb tub of whey protein. Think that’s expensive? It’s not. Consider this, you can get 60 serves of whey protein from a 5lb tub. How much would that cost you to eat in whole foods? A lot.

I agree with the statements made and believe this to be a good article. However, you should never “over-substitute” protein shakes for whole foods. Studies have shown that whole foods provide not only protein, but also essential vitamins, minerals, and complex carbs to help push everything through your system. Many professional body builders actually prefer whole - protein rich - foods over protein shakes. Best source of protein at the best price is canned tuna.
The only time you should REALLY use a protein shake is right after a workout, or if you’re under time constraints.
My recommendation for a really good post workout protein shake is IsoPure - Whey Isolate. Mix that up with some gatorade (to push it through your system).
